Activities of the project
- Organization and administrative activities
In this period we have started the research project also through administrative procedures which have included the employment of 5 persons, Caterina PREDA – project director, Ioana CIOCAN, Alina POPESCU, Dumitru LĂCĂTUȘU, Diana MATEI). All 5 members are part of the team nominated in the research proposal. Diana Matei for personal reasons wanted to interrupt the contract. Thus, the 5th position in the team of the project is an open position and we will hire a person holding a Master’s Degree or a Doctoral Degree and who will start to work in 2016. For administrative reasons, the members of the team for the research project could only be hired at the beginning of November, and some of the activities planned for 2015 (according to the initial calendar of the project that was supposed to start in May 2015) were moved in the next years, respectively 2016, and 2017.
- Scientific activities
In the period 1 October – 30 December 2015 I have, together with the members of the team, Dr. Ioana Ciocan, Dr. Alina Popescu, Drd. Dumitru Lăcătușu, organized a preliminary research of the archives, as well as a bibliographical research for the project on the Union of Visual Artists (1950-2010).
The bibliographical research included the magazines edited by the Union of Visual Artists: Revista Arta Plastica & Revista Arta which where analyzed at the Library of the Union of Visual Artists, but also the online resources such as the scientific databases such as EBSCO, Proquest, Jstor, Sage, etc. We have identified some important bibliographical resources for the construction of the arguments in the next stage of the research project.
The archives we consulted include: the Central Historical National Archives (ANIC), the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS), the Archives of the Union of Visual Artists at the Combinatul Fondului Plastic and the Library of the UAP.

- CNSAS – the Documentary Fund for Art and Culture
– the files for the presidents of the UAP (5 of 12)
- The UAP Archive (1973-2010) – Combinatul Fondului Plastic (unsystematized, still under exploration) and the Library of the UAP (that includes especially documents that concern the organization of exhibitions by the Union, and other aspects for the production of monuments.
Two exploratory workshops were organized inside the project with the students of the Department of Political Science, University of Bucharest and the National University of Arts.
Thus, November 19th, Ioana Ciocan organized an exploratory workshop at the National University of Arts with the students of the Urban art course, 2nd year of the Master Program of Mural Art. The workshop was organized in the George Enescu Square, Kretzulescu Square, an area characterized by Mihai Oroveanu as “the statues maidan”. Between 1992 and 2010 in this area were placed around one of the main boulevards of the capital, 5 monuments with 5 different authors. During the workshop the monuments were analyzed for their placing, the historical significations, and the urban planning.
The second exploratory workshop was organized on the 24th of November at the Department of Political Science, with the participation of the students of the 3rd year course on Arts and politics (French section) held by the project director, Dr. Caterina Preda. The workshop had as a central topic the analysis of the evolution suffered after 1989 by the cultural institutions consolidated during the communist regime of Romania, with an accent on the Union of Visual Artists. The legal framework of the cultural policies after 1990 in Romania was discussed, as well as the structure of the Union of Visual Artists during the period 1990-2010.
Participation to international conferences by the members of the team
October 3rd 2015, Caterina Preda presented a paper at the 39th Annual Conference of the Association of German Studies at Washington D.C. in the USA with the topic ”Artistic resistance in dictatorships: a comparison of Romania and Chile in the 1970s and 1980s” accentuating the case of the Union of Visual Artists of Romania.
Caterina Preda moderated October 12th a discussion in the framework of the Bucharest Art Week 2015 about Studio (Atelier) 35 Oradea (Orizont Gallery, Bucharest), the discussion included details concerning Studio 35 – the youth cenacle of the UAP at the national level.

Planned results in the first stage of the project
Identifying the available documents and the studies already realized starting from these archives. The results will include: exploratory workshops with the students of the Department of Political Science of the University of Bucharest and the National University of Arts to identify the information that exist on the research topic. Results obtained in the first stage of the project
In the period October 1st – December 31st 2015 the members of the team started the exploration of theoretical and primary sources of the archives (CNSAS, ANIC, UAP) and initiated already a list of documents that will constitute the main basis for the research project. Inside the project were organized 2 exploratory workshops with the students from the Department of Political Science, University of Bucharest, and the National University of Arts where the monuments production by the UAP was discussed and about the changes suffered by the UAP after 1990 comparatively with the communist period (1950-1990).
